Billionaire oilman and Portland hockey team owner William Gallacher paid $11.11 million in cash for a mansion in one of north Scottsdale's most luxurious neighborhoods, Silverleaf.
The almost 13,000-square-foot estate includes nine bathrooms, six bedrooms, multiple pools, a guest house and a 1,000-bottle wine room. The sale is the priciest so far in DC Ranch's Silverleaf. It's the second most expensive house to sell in Arizona this year.
Venture capital fund executive Gallacher started Calgary-based Athabasca Oil Corp. in 2006. He bought the Western Hockey League's Winterhawks in 2008. A few years ago, he was tied to an unsuccessful deal to buy the Phoenix Coyotes.
Dow Chemical executive Geoffery Merszei and his wife, Mary, sold the home, according to public real estate records.
Deborah Beardsley, associate broker of Silverleaf Realty, sold the home and declined to talk about the buyer or seller.
She said a few more multi-million dollar estates are in escrow in Silverleaf now.
"Silverleaf is commanding the highest home prices in the Valley," Beardsley said. "It's not a community for people looking for deals. It's a community for buyers who want a fabulous investment and wonderful neighborhood."
Two mansions priced higher than $24 million are currently for sale in Silverleaf.
